Procedures

l The mere thought of having a procedure is enough to make some patients wince. Many of our patients have had unpleasant experiences previously and are pleasantly surprised at their experience with us. The key to procedures is to remember that they are there to improve your quality of life. With that in mind here are some important points.

1) A procedure will only work if done properly. Some physicians are in too much of a rush and this results in poorer results.

2) A procedure will only help if it is appropriate for a particular patient's needs.

3) You must understand what is involved, the potential benefits and risks.

4) It is futile to continue to repeat procedures that do not have a significant positive impact upon your quality of life.

5) All pain procedures need to be done under X-ray guidance. Studies show that epidurals done without X-ray guidance are in the wrong place 60% of the time! It is your body, your life. Do not entrust it to someone who does not have the appropriate equipment.

6) Never be rushed into a procedure. If you are not ready for it I would be surprised if you have much benefit.

7) Ask about the research evidence to support a procedure. Facet joint injections and lumbar epidurals for back pain have very little research to support performing them.

8) If you do not feel that you are being treated with dignity or respect then find another physician.

9) It is your body you can say "STOP" at any time; before or during the procedure.

The pages of this section have some basic details about the procedures; the information included is only a brief summary. Be sure to speak to Dr. Harries about any questions you may have prior to your procedure.
